Tractor Trailer Accident Kills 2 People on Highway 49

The driver of a tractor-trailer that struck a car and killed two people Dec.22 on Hwy 49 South in Randolph County is facing additional charges.

Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter

Timothy John McCarty, 36, of Cabarrus County, has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. He posted an $80,000 bond.

McCarty was originally charged with passing in a no-passing zone. The accident took place around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Hwy 49 and Dunbar Bridge Road.

He is accused of trying to pass several vehicles in a two-lane no-passing zone while coming over the crest of a hill. Three cars were coming in the opposite direction.

The tractor-trailer collided head-on with one of them side-swiped another, authorities said.

Danny Ray Perry, 49, and Kelly Perry, 53, were struck in a 1997 Chevy Lumina and both died at the scene.

The couple’s grandson, 6-year-old Deacon Cole, was also riding in the car. He was airlifted to Wake Baptist Medical Center and has since been released.
