Do Commercial Drivers Get Enough Training?

Do Commercial Drivers Get Enough Training?

Understanding CDL Requirements

Operating a commercial vehicle requires the driver to have the knowledge, experience, skills, and physical capabilities to ensure their safety and other drivers' safety while on the road. Obtaining a commercial driver's license (CDL) doesn't mean that truck drivers are always prepared right out of the gate for a safe trip. Here's what you need to know.

CDL Requirements

To be able to obtain a commercial driver's license, prospective truck drivers must meet the following requirements as per the Missouri Department of Revenue:

  • Pass several written tests to receive a CDL permit.
  • Undergo a medical exam and submit a certified medical as part of their driving record depending on the truck operation type.
  • Meet age requirements (be at least 18 years of age for intrastate driving and over 21 for interstate driving and transporting hazardous materials.

Other requirements and the above may be mandated depending on the industry and type of truck. For example, bus drivers and HAZMAT (hazardous material) drivers may have to obtain special endorsements.

Note: Prospective truck drivers are NOT required to attend a commercial driver education program to be eligible for a CDL license.

Truck Driver Training

Even after all the testing, endorsements, and training, there are still a significant number of truck accidents happening on Missouri roads every day. According to the latest crash data from the Missouri State Highway patrol, between 2005 and 2014, there were 1,139 fatal crashes involving commercial motor vehicles.

Driver inexperience and inadequate training are among the top reasons why trucking accidents happen. In many cases, trucking companies want to get their new drivers out on the road quickly and push their new and inexperienced drivers behind large and dangerous vehicles — leading to severe or fatal truck crashes.
